Internship Spotlight: Ana Beatriz Lopes

Ana is a second-year NICBC student who interned at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) education department. Here are some reflections about the experience:

In just a few sentences, please tell us about your summer internship. How does it connect to your personal and professional interests?

This summer, I interned remotely with the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) in their education department. My main project was reviewing and redesigning the Type 2 Diabetes Remission and Reversal of Insulin Resistance Certificate Course. This experience directly connected to my interests in nutrition communication, behavior change, and translating scientific evidence into practical content for healthcare professionals.

How did you land your internship?

I learned about the opportunity through the Career Center, although I was previously familiar with the ACLM mission and principles. I sent them my application and was called for an interview. After sharing my background, what I could contribute being a Friedman School student, along with my career and professional interests, I was invited to join the Education Department team as a summer intern.

What did you enjoy about your internship? What did you find challenging?

I really enjoyed collaborating with a multidisciplinary team and contributing to a project that has national impact on healthcare education. The most challenging part was synthesizing large amounts of content to make it both scientifically accurate and accessible for a wide audience of health professionals.

What are the necessary soft and hard skills needed for this position?

Hard skills include strong writing and editing, content analysis, and familiarity with clinical guidelines. Soft skills include adaptability, collaboration, and effective communication.

If you could offer one piece of internship search advice to your peers, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to reach out directly to organizations or individuals whose work inspires you. Sometimes opportunities are created through initiative and conversation with other people that shares same interest as you! So stay connected!
