BFAC is seeking a Senior Executive Consultant to provide part-time leadership and coordination for our growing coalition. This is a temporary, 6-month position with the potential for extension.
Time Commitment: 8-10 hours per week for 6 months (with possibility for extension if additional funding is secured)
Compensation: For this 6 month commitment, $13,000-$15,000 (approximately $2,100-$2,500 per month)
Reports to: BFAC Steering Committee
Location: Remote with regular in-person meetings in Boston; preference given to candidates who live and/or work in Boston. Consultants pricing this job should include travel costs (i.e. mileage reimbursement within the budgeted amount).
About BFAC
BFAC is a coalition of organizations and individuals committed to creating a more equitable, sustainable food system in Boston. Formed through city-led efforts in 2009 and relaunched in 2016, BFAC has grown into a community-driven, cross-sector alliance with a focus on advocacy, collaboration, and food justice.
BFAC is an independent organization, operating in partnership with city, state and community organizations.
Role Summary
The Senior Executive Consultant will provide strategic leadership and operational coordination for BFAC. Working closely with the 9-person volunteer Steering Committee, the consultant will serve as a “fractional Executive Director for the organization” and will execute the organization’s strategic priorities, deepen partnerships, and strengthen BFAC’s infrastructure. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with strong nonprofit experience, deep equity values, and a passion for building coalitions and systems-level change. The candidate will make their own schedule but must be available to meet with colleagues and partners during standard work day hours and have flexibility for occasional evening and weekend meetings and events as well.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance
- Partner with Steering Committee to implement BFAC’s strategic plan
- Serve as the primary contact and representative of BFAC
- Facilitate monthly steering committee meetings and regular check-ins
- Be the point of contact for BFAC’s fiscal sponsor, NOPI
- Work in partnership with steering committee members to implement regular and new BFAC activities, such as public meetings, partner convenings, and more
Coalition Coordination
- Manage working groups, maintain member engagement, and support new SC member onboarding
- Support interns or part-time staff/volunteers with clear goals and project plans
Policy Advocacy
- Lead the implementation of BFAC’s advocacy agenda (e.g., HIP, food rescue and waste reduction, municipal food equity)
- Maintain strong relationships with government and coalition partners, including OFJ, MA Food System Collaborative, and city and state legislators
Communications
- Ensure ongoing management of BFAC’s public presence (email updates, social media, press releases)
- Ensure ongoing maintenance of website and develop outreach materials
Fundraising & Resource Development
- Support fund development through grant writing, funder reports, and donor engagement
- Co-create a long-term funding strategy to sustain the ED role, intern stipends and coalition
operations
Organizational Infrastructure and Administration
- Oversee tools for communication, project management, and knowledge retention
- Collaborate with steering committee, partners, and consultants to define and strengthen governance and fiscal systems
- Develop standard operating procedures for BFAC activities, such as hosting public meetings and coordinating steering committee meetings, to facilitate ability for steering committee and working group members to support these activities
- Develop internal systems and organization to streamline use of BFAC files and toolsManage and facilitate administrative tasks necessary for operating the organization-including the ongoing relationship with fiscal sponsor, NOPI
Qualifications
- 7+ years experience in nonprofit leadership, coalition-building, or advocacy
- Knowledge of food systems, public health, or urban equity issues in Boston
- Strong facilitation, communication, and relationship-building skills
- Experience working with volunteers, public officials, and diverse stakeholders
- Demonstrated commitment to racial equity, economic justice, and community-led solutions
