6 Things You Can Do to Get a Career Head Start This Spring

You might be applying for summer internships this spring, or you may be considering a different path. No matter which year you are in, and what plan you have for the summer, here are 6 things you can do to get you a head start in career development.

1. Resume revision

Resume, resume, resume… There is always room for improvement. And you are always a better version of yourself compared to your last version of the resume. So, let the world know about it! No matter where you are in your resume writing process, we are here to help. How do we fit a little bit more of your experience with precise wording? What can we do to fill in the gap between your experience and the job description? How can we help you to present your awesomeness to employers? We have all been there: not sure if we were qualified enough for our dream jobs or lacking the right word to describe past experience. Sign up for one of our resume coaching sessions. You can find that link here.

2. Join us for BCC events

We have lots of events still to come this spring, from Career Discovery Sessions to employer info sessions, career workshops, and more! Find a list of Spring 2024 events here.

3. Take a look at the past internship presentations

Here’s a link to past internship presentations from other Friedman students. Don’t stress out! Each presentation is around 5 minutes in length and you can navigate through different programs. For example, if you are a NICBC student who is interested in a FANNP job opportunity, don’t forget that you have access to all the presentations (not limited to your program).

4. Networking

Sending out messages to strangers on LinkedIn sound too stressful? Yes, we get it. Try scheduling a meeting with one of our Featured Alumni Volunteers today! Covering all the major career directions we have in Friedman school, you can easily find someone with an interesting career background. Scheduling a meeting is a painless process: just find a time that works for you, answer a few questions, and you are good to go! You can also make connections with alumni or students that you see at our events. You will have the opportunity to hear their stories and incorporate their wisdom in your job hunting journey.

5. Research, research, research

Where do I find internships? Just go to our current internship listings, which are updated on a regular basis. You can also find jobs on Handshake, LinkedIn, and other job boards. Want to discuss ways to research positions that could be a good fit for you? Schedule a time to speak with a career advisor.

6. Pick up some new skills

When you look at a job description, you may feel that you don’t have all the skills they are looking for. It does not necessarily mean that you will not get the job. But if you find that certain keywords keep popping up in job descriptions, you might consider strengthening those skills. There are lots of online free resources such as Udemy Online Learning, Coursera and university extension services that could help you out. Being at Tufts University is a great advantage! If you cannot fit more classes into your schedule, try emailing professors and ask if you can audit their classes.

We wish you the best of luck in job hunting. And we are always here to help.
